I always knew I wanted a meaningful life, full of incredible people, experiences and career opportunities. My mom, who I call my jefecita, always told me that I could be whoever I wanted to be. She was the one who helped me get into one of Mexico's top universities. She knew it would open up a hundred doors, each offering a chance to chase my dreams. As a single mother, it was my jefa who gave me the grit, the determination, and the love I needed to make it anywhere. To grab the bull by the horns and hold on tight!
For the longest time I wanted to be a car engineer in Germany. It was the capital for automotive design, and I pictured myself crafting the next generation of global brands like BMW, Audi and Porsche. And so I used this dream-job as my compass. Every decision I made was to get me one step closer to Germany. It’s how I ended up designing leather cowboy boots for three years. And during this time, I learned the importance of a positive attitude. How it holds the power to make even the most undesirable of situations bearable.
Life is about taking chances and embracing the unknown. You are the captain of your own ship. Harness the wind and see where it takes you.
After I graduated, I still was day-dreaming of Germany. Hoping to get onto the European continent, I signed up with an international organization that helped recent grads find work abroad. But as the months flew by, it was apparent that industrial designers were not in high demand. I endured a year of radio silence before, from out of the blue, came an email from a tiny industrial design firm. They had seen my portfolio and wanted an interview. A few weeks later, my jefa cried tears of joy as I told her that I was moving to Norway.
My dream of working with cars evaporated when I realized the beauty of designing for different industries across the globe. It’s actually my favorite part about Snowball Digital. The diversity of the work and their desire to push you outside of your comfort zone. And that's exactly where I thrive: in the unknown and challenging. The less I know about the subject, the more I want to dive right in. Today, I am proud to say that UI and UX are my preferred subjects. It's where I find the most self-growth. And now I couldn’t picture myself working with anything else.
Dreams are meant to be revised. It's never about the destination. It's the journey that really matters.
Growth is a never-ending process. It’s why I have really come to enjoy the sport of Crossfit. No matter how good you think you are, there is always better. Whether it's a clean, a double-under, or a handstand push-up, none of it comes easy. In that way, Crossfit mirrors my life. You choose a goal, and then put in the blood, sweat and tears to accomplish it. Maybe along the way your goal changes. So you readjust your compass and walk in a different direction. Life is a series of problems, you just need to find the ones worth solving.
